Mac Studio M3 Ultra rental vs cloud GPU: what it costs to fit a 350GB model
Big open-weight models like DeepSeek-V3.2 (352 GiB at 4-bit), Llama 4 Maverick (304 GiB at 6-bit) or Qwen3-Coder-480B (~250 GiB at 4-bit) need more memory than any single GPU has. In the cloud that usually means a full 8-GPU node. A 512GB Mac Studio holds them in one machine's unified memory.
Cost for the same rental window
| Option | Memory for weights | 3 days | 7 days | 14 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mac Compute Rentals, M3 Ultra 512GB | 512 GB unified | $299 | $489 | $779 |
| Lambda on-demand 8x H100 SXM ($3.99/GPU-hr) | 640 GB VRAM | $2,298 | $5,363 | $10,725 |
| AWS p5.48xlarge on-demand, us-east-1 ($55.04/hr) | 640 GB VRAM | $3,963 | $9,247 | $18,493 |
Cloud prices: Lambda instances page and AWS on-demand list price, both checked Oct 14, 2026, compute only (no storage, egress or tax), billed for every hour of the window. Our price is flat and includes the whole machine for the term.
Per hour, that's about $4.15 (3 days), $2.91 (7 days) or $2.32 (14 days) for the entire Studio, versus $31.92/hr for a Lambda 8x H100 node.
When the Mac is the right tool
- Fitting the model is the goal: evals, prompt and agent development, quantization experiments, private inference on a 300–450 GiB model.
- MLX and Apple silicon work: porting, benchmarking or building for Metal and MLX.
- Predictable spend: a flat price instead of a meter running while you debug.
When to pick the GPU node
- High-throughput serving to many users or large-scale training. An 8x H100 node has far more compute and memory bandwidth; the Mac Studio's 819 GB/s unified memory is built for single-user inference.
- CUDA-only code.
